Why it can work

  • Customers have no other way to get the part
  • Pay is for skill, not plastic
  • Each finished file can become a catalogue item

Why it might fail

  • Hard to quote and hours can overrun
  • Fit may need several rounds
  • Safety-critical requests must be refused

Be aware before you sell

You own the CAD you create, so state in your terms who keeps the file. Copying a single part for repair is usually lower risk, but check design rights and refuse branded logos. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Selling skilled CAD time avoids the race to the bottom on filament, but the $500 to $1,500 figure comes from one vendor's scan-based workflow and small jobs will be far lower. It works with a paid fit sample first and a written refusal of brake, fuel or other safety-critical parts, and it fails when jobs are quoted too cheaply.

Competition

Freelancers on Fiverr and CAD Crowd and local print shops offer this, but most quote per job and few specialise in a niche.
