A typical product here: Rank and file tray

Where each sale goes

At $5.00 you lose $0.43 on every sale. Costs $4.05, fees $0.88.

Why it can work

  • Low brand or licence risk if the design is your own

Why it might fail

  • Crowded market, so prices can fall fast
  • Under $2 estimated profit per print hour

Be aware before you sell

Trays are easy to design yourself, which avoids any file licence question; name base sizes rather than game factions. Trays are plain functional shapes, so risk comes only from naming game systems or factions in titles. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Trays print in minutes, carry almost no IP risk and sell in multiples, because a whole army needs them. It works as custom sizes and army bundles, and fails as single trays at $2, where postage exceeds the product.

Public signals suggest high competition.

Make it your own
  • Design for one game format, not one franchise
  • Use your own creature or theme, never a brand name
  • Sell it finished and painted at a higher price
