Why it can work

  • Few sellers compared with other products
  • Seasonal demand: Christmas and new set launches (my judgement, not measured)

Why it might fail

  • Under $2 estimated profit per print hour
  • LEGO is a protected trademark and sets may name car brands too, so the mount must not copy bricks or logos, and I did not research LEGO's enforcement
  • Thin public evidence, so treat these numbers with care

Be aware before you sell

Say 'compatible with' rather than using the brand as the product name, and draw your own mount or check the file licence. LEGO is a protected trademark and sets may name car brands too, so the mount must not copy bricks or logos, and I did not research LEGO's enforcement. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Set-specific mounts solve a clear problem and face fewer sellers than generic stands. It works if you follow new large sets and use neutral wording, and fails if a trademark complaint arrives over product naming.

Competition

Public signals suggest low competition.

Make it your own
  • Design for one game format, not one franchise
  • Use your own creature or theme, never a brand name
  • Sell it finished and painted at a higher price
Where to find 3D files

Use these for research. Check each licence and never assume you may sell a print. Search links show live results.
