Why it can work

  • Low brand or licence risk if the design is your own

Why it might fail

  • Under $2 estimated profit per print hour

Be aware before you sell

Design your own or confirm the file allows selling prints, since the file licences seen were not checked. Racks are functional items, and Citadel, Vallejo and Army Painter names should only describe bottle fit. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

It is low risk and suits FDM, and the buyers keep adding paints, so expansions can sell later. Note the Etsy result may mix files and printed items, so it works best as a modular system with add-ons, and fails if buyers simply print the free files.

Competition

Public signals suggest medium competition.

Make it your own
  • Design for one game format, not one franchise
  • Use your own creature or theme, never a brand name
  • Sell it finished and painted at a higher price
Where to find 3D files

Use these for research. Check each licence and never assume you may sell a print. Search links show live results.

Demand signals
  • Feldherr sells paint bottle holders as a retail accessory source
  • Many print files exist for this need, which suggests steady interest but also home printing source
