Why it can work

  • Limited positive evidence so far

Why it might fail

  • Crowded market, so prices can fall fast
  • Under $2 estimated profit per print hour
  • Every sculpt is the designer's copyright, Loot Studios bars selling prints even when painted, and D&D-style wording in listings adds trademark exposure

Be aware before you sell

Use only a written merchant licence for the exact files, read whether it covers Etsy, and note that a designer's licence may not satisfy Etsy's reported original-design rule. Every sculpt is the designer's copyright, Loot Studios bars selling prints even when painted, and D&D-style wording in listings adds trademark exposure. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Material cost is tiny but so is the ticket, with 32mm figures around $3 to $10 and large creatures reported up to $89, and this needs a resin printer rather than FDM. It works for a shop with a resin setup and paid licences, and fails on FDM or with unlicensed files.

Competition

Public signals suggest high competition.

Make it your own
  • Design for one game format, not one franchise
  • Use your own creature or theme, never a brand name
  • Sell it finished and painted at a higher price

Demand signals
  • Dedicated print shops exist for this, such as Ryn's Wild Menagerie and We Print Miniatures source
  • Loot Studios sells monthly bundles of 20 or more minis at about $15, which feeds home printing rather than buying printed minis source
  • One blog estimates about $0.21 of resin for a 32mm mini source
