Why it can work

  • Real, ageing buyer base
  • Very cheap to print
  • Custom sizing is something moulded aids cannot offer

Why it might fail

  • Libraries print key turners for under $1
  • Free open-source designs cover most needs
  • Food contact and health claims add liability

Be aware before you sell

Makers Making Change designs are open source, often CC BY-SA, so check attribution terms before selling. Rated for liability rather than IP: a utensil handle touches food and a medical claim can make it a regulated device, so sell these as everyday aids only. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Charities and libraries hand these out at material cost, and a plain moulded key turner is listed for under GBP 7, so a paid generic print has little room. Only a custom-fit service for occupational therapists could work, and it must avoid medical claims and use a food-safe route for anything touching food.

How the score adds up
Profit per print hour5/30
Demand15/25
Low competition5/20
Low legal risk8/15
Evidence quality6/10

The score is our estimate from public prices and signals, not sales data. Evidence confidence: medium.

Competition

Charities, library programmes and mass-made aids from care retailers crowd this out, so paid printed sellers face near-free alternatives.
