Why it can work

  • Strong gift appeal
  • High perceived value
  • Weddings and families pay for keepsakes

Why it might fail

  • Needs a scanner and colour printing
  • Faces look wrong in FDM
  • Likeness and privacy duties apply

Be aware before you sell

Using a customer's photos needs clear terms, and AI face tools add their own terms. A likeness needs the person's consent, and a child's scan is sensitive personal data. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

Full-colour figures need machines far beyond an FDM print farm, and the $39 to $119 figures come from an old write-up and may be stale. It only works with a scanner, a colour printer or a good painter at events, and it fails as a home-based FDM offer.

Low competition12/20
Low legal risk8/15

The score is our estimate from public prices and signals, not sales data. Evidence confidence: low.

Competition

Specialist scanning studios and now AI figure services occupy this, so a small FDM seller has no clear edge.
