Why it can work

  • Low brand or licence risk if the design is your own
  • Seasonal demand: Christmas, autumn, wedding season

Why it might fail

  • Under $2 estimated profit per print hour
  • Thin public evidence, so treat these numbers with care

Be aware before you sell

CGTrader's standard taper holder shows a custom licence, so read each file's terms before selling prints. Simple forms are low risk, so the concern is copied designer shapes rather than trademarks. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

A modular taper system from $5.95 and a 3-piece tealight set at £23.47 (about $31 at an assumed 1.3) mark the range, and the ticket is small. It works in a heat-resistant material with a metal or glass insert and clear safety wording, and fails if a plastic holder softens near a flame.
