Filament, power, your time $3.87Marketplace fees $1.02Left from this sale $1.11

Why it can work

  • Low brand or licence risk if the design is your own
  • Seasonal demand: August to September for back to school, plus school start in Germany

Why it might fail

  • Crowded market, so prices can fall fast
  • Thin public evidence, so treat these numbers with care

Be aware before you sell

Check the font licence, and on Etsy use your own design since the 2025 rule reportedly excludes third-party files. Low risk for plain names, higher for team logos or characters customers request. Etsy asks for your own original design, so a licensed file may not qualify.

How to get a file you may sell

  1. Make your own. Tinkercad is free and enough for simple shapes.
  2. Buy a commercial licence. Many designers on Cults3D, MyMiniFactory and Etsy sell one. Read what it allows.
  3. Use open licences. CC0 and CC BY allow selling prints. NC does not. Filter by licence on Printables or MakerWorld and keep a screenshot.

Our take

It sells on the same logic as keychains with slightly higher prices and a clear back-to-school moment. It works if tags are sturdy with a good strap, and fails on price alone because the product is easy to copy.

Competition

Public signals suggest high competition.

Make it your own
  • Add a name, date or message buyers cannot get off the shelf
  • Pick one occasion and style, not a general gift
